Finally there is something interesting in the New York Times Magazine, a profile of Juan Goytisolo. One notes that the Times has only managed to review three of his books since 1981, good job there.
A superb website translating Emily Dickinson into Italian.
the goytisolo article was really interesting. though, you know, i kept thinking that a lot of his life would not have been possible for him if he were a woman, similarly placed.
as in: i’d love to live in marrakesh & spend my days in the medieval square where the snake-charmers and oral storytellers are. but.
very much true. hmmm, jane bowles? though she wasn’t quite single.
you could go in drag, which is vaguely – only vaguely – akin to goytisolo’s life: i can’t imagine that even a relatively liberal muslim society takes kindly to gay men. maybe they do? i wonder if it’s better or worse than spain.
i’ve heard that unspoken-of things frequently go on between young men in societies like iran where the conflicting expectations are held that a) young women will be completely chaste before marriage, and b) young men will nonetheless have sexual experience to share with/teach their brides when they get married.
obviously it takes very different forms from gay-ness in the west though. and also obviously, i’ve heard about this from books and magazines, not people.
